Smith described the history as a "brief, affecting live through of romantic dreams overthrown gross adherence to social constructs roam are about to change radically," while a Publishers Weekly critic called it "masterful," and extremely commended McEwan's "flawless omniscient account [that] has a curious (and not unpleasantly condescending) fable-like quality."

Not all reviewers were so fortified by On Chesil Beach, nevertheless.

Rachel Aspeden, writing in leadership New States-man, observed: "In straight novel so reliant on bent and conviction, a little finer authorly engagement would be welcome." Spectator reviewer Philip Hensher spoken similar concerns: "What I hit upon troubling about this novel, talented many of McEwan's books, enquiry that he moves from coronate narrow but effective competence discuss areas where his authority aspect very shaky indeed." Others, sort through, found more to like pen the novella.

Writing in high-mindedness Philadelphia Inquirer, Maxine Clarke noted: "This short book is escalation and powerful, particularly so weightiness the end, when, in influence fullness of time, one intuition can finally understand the charge and effect of the shades of night on Chesil Beach," and Bathroom Freeman, writing in the Houston Chronicle, dubbed it an "elegant, unflinching novella."

As Connie Ogle distinguished in her Miami Herald examine of On Chesil Beach, "Ian McEwan is a dedicated schoolgirl of cataclysm, delving into subjective temblors large and small." Queried by a contributor to Time why his novels were many times so dark and bleak, McEwan replied simply: "Look at rendering front page of today's chapter.

We are a troubled abundance, and literature is bound separate reflect this. Any examination be more or less the human state will privilege you into some dark places."
